SEMESTER 1

Computer Application   in Health Care (2 credits)  The course covers  data analysis  to support decision  making, client care, and regulatory compliance. Topics include clinical terminology and systems vocabulary,  data capture methodology,  data presentation and reporting, and initiatives to improve  the quality of client care. Upon completion,  students should be able to identify data elements and sets, analyze capture methodology in health care settings, analyze compliance issues and apply  policies/procedures to facilitate  electronic   health records.



Communication Skills and Public Relations  (2 credits) The course will assist the learner  to acquire knowledge and skills of communicating  effectively  in both academic communication skills such as reading and writing for academic and business purposes. The course further focuses  on assisting the health care provider in various  human communication contexts.  Learners will examine factors which enhance and inhibit organizational communication. Interpersonal skills, public relations and customer care shall be explored and their link to effective communication demonstrated.



Community Midwifery Care (3 credits) The course will equip the learner with theoretical 

knowledge that will enable her/him to identify  and deal with factors contributing to safe motherhood so that she/he can contribute effectively in reducing  maternal  and peri-natal morbidity  and mortality.   It  will also strengthen the learner's  skills to enable  her/him to apply relevant  and current information  in midwifery practice within  the community utilizing the midwifery   management process.  Emphasis is on introduction to community based midwifery,  family concepts and childbearing family,  overview  of Sexual and Reproductive  Health,  Safe Motherhood Initiative,Adolescent Health, male involvement in SRH and overview  of PMTCT in Botswana.



Family Planning (4credits)  The knowledge gained  in this course will enable the learner to provide  comprehensive  family  planning services.  The course covers family policies, record keeping in family planning management of clients  with  reproductive health problems. It also covers  methods of contraceptions  and how they are influenced by medical conditions such as HIV

and AIDS and Sexually  Transmitted Infections.



Ante-Partum Care-low  risk (6 credits) The course will enable the learner to acquire knowledge,  attitude and skills in caring for clients with low risk  pregnancy following established policies and  protocols utilizing  the midwifery management process. The course covers anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system and normal pregnancy.
